6:30a. Awake. Pack up gear. Loads of things in one pack. Cold. As always. I think its pretty great. The hotel has been perfect. A great hub for Glasgow. It si right next to a serious train station. Queen Street. Love it. Ready to go. Check-out. Walk to the train station. Glasgow to Edinburgh at 8:30a. We are early. Station is a slight empty. Not many travelers on Sunday. Nice. Two coffees from Costa. Platform 2. And we’re on the train. Stuff our packs in the overhead rack. Found a table seat. Tiff is riding forward. I am backward. 80 minute ride. Many people boarding now. 8:30a. And we’re off. Old buildings abound. Still amazes me. Note: Everyone is skinny over here. Possibly related to their diet. Very little fast food. Also, the public transportation is great.. Many people could effectively walk to work with the aid of a Bus, Subway, or Train. Beautiful scenery all around. Read. Travel days are always exciting. Conductor just announced a platform 11 train to London from Edinburgh. Might be the one we’re looking for. Arrive. 10 Minutes early. Sweet. Platform 11 is it. A different part of the station. National Rail. No more ScotRail. Sad. On the train. Brilliant. Train to London calling at York. Awesome. This train is nice. Serious. And we’re off. England here we come. We haven’t seen this side of Edinburgh yet. I think that it’s 4 1/2 hours from Edinburgh to London. Shorter than I would have thought. Time to read. North Sea is to our left. We are on the left side of the train. Best views. Noted. Reading up on York. Getting close to England. I think.

England! We are calling at NewCastle. Fairly large city. England is flat. York is the next stop. Soon. And we’re there. Off the train. York is great. Ahh. Food festival this week. Streets are packed. Crazy. Found hotel. Can’t check-in yet. Left luggage. hotel is above coffee shop. Explore town. Old wall circling entire city. Built in the 1200’s. You can walk along the entire wall. All sorts of food. Time to find York Minster. The largest Gothic Cathedral in northern Europe. Found it. Whoa! Massive. Truly. Incredible. Closed until 1:30p. Perfect. Enough time to find food. Back to food tents in city center. Tiffany purchased a Spanish dish. And strawberry ice cream. Fish and Chips for me. Love them fishes. All finished up. Back to York Minster. 8 Pounds each. Climb the tower. view of the entire city. Photos. Back down to earth. Walk through the minster. Huge. Epic. Ceilings are at least 100 feet high. Many are higher.Old. Done exploring. Church service is starting. Organ and Choir. Back into town. Shops. Walk around. Hotel Check-IN. Room is great. Unpack. Back into town. Really a great town. We’ll need to come back someday. Food tents. I bought a vintage cheese wedge. Love it here. Walking around the wall. Mucho Explore. Time for a break. Found a park. Sit. Rest. Now for third meal. Pizza Express again. Right on the river. Lovely. A long delicious dinner. Sunset. Dark. I love British talk. Back to hotel. Bed. Peace.

(Glasgow, Scotland) Wake up @ 8a. Cold again. Stirling Castle today. Should be pretty great. And we’re off to the train station. We are looking for the 9:43a to Aberdeen calling at Stirling. hmm. Waiting in the station. Enough time for breakfast. Costa. Two caramel coffees. And a chocolate swirl pastry for Tiffany. 9:23a. Platform 4. Board the train. Some very thick accents on this train. Probably, the local Aberdeen residents. Aberdeen is a city in the north east of Scotland. Almost as far north as Inverness in the west. Find seats. Now we wait. Coffee is good. The caramel shot adds to the glory. Train is off. Glasgow outskirts. Interesting. It was dark when we traveled from Fort William. Increible. I have to focus super hard to understand the people on this train. A different brand of English. Riding backwards. Arrive. 10:09a. Fast. Off the train. Out of the station. Stirling is a lovely town. Very Old. Super clean. Shops everywhere. Time to find the information center. Found it. Quite far from the train station. Off to find the castle. Atop a hill. Sounds about right. Really a great town. Up. Up. Up. Castle is big. Massive. Purchase a ticket to tour. Old. 1000AD to 1100AD. Amazing. Sterling Castle. William Wallace and Robert thw Bruce are notable characters here. Whoa. There is some kind of event at the castle today. “A day of Legends”. Numerous Plays/Skits/Dialogues this weekend depicting historical events. Awesome! I love it. We’ll start with the walking tour. 45minutes. 11a. Tour is great. Loads of information. An overview of the castle. Now to explore. High stone walls. Various buildings within the walls. Great hall. Church. Armory. Living area. Castle is great. Photos. William Wallace skit was good. More exploration. Time for lunch. Cafe on the grounds. The Unicorn Cafe. Perfect. Two jacket potatoes, two Pepsi’s, and haggis. Dude. Tastes odd. They linke to mix it with their potatoes. Not the greatest. Done with lunch. A bit more exploring. Leave the castle. Back down into the city. Shops. Small Coffee/Tea shops are everywhere. 2p. 3p. Done. Back to the train station for the ride back to Glasgow. Wait. Earlier train. Nice. No. The train came to the wrong platform. Stopped for 60 seconds. And left. People are a bit upset. Lots of locals waiting for that train. We’ll wait for the original train. Platform 3. On the train. Table seat. That’s a first for the ScotRail. Riding forwards. Also a first. Fast. 25 minutes. No Stops. Back at Queen Street Station Glasgow. Return to our hotel for a quick break. Tired. Back on the streets. Walk around. Exploration. Small boys break dancing on the streets. Awesome. Little Pizzeria on the corner of our street. No name. Nine inch cheese pizza for Tiffany. Twelve inch peperoni for me. Eat dinner in our room. I stopped by a small shop for some soda and treats. Delicious. Pizza was great. Relax before our journey to England tomorrow. Good night world.

(Glasgow, Scotland) Awake. Another three night stay. Lovely. 8a. Off to the information center to get a map of Stirling for tomorrow. Glasgow is very industrial. Great architecture. Not very historical. Walk to the Cathedral Church of Saint Mungo. Uphill. Typical. Beautiful building. Dark. Very Gothic. Students are scattered around painting and drawing. Giant arches. Stunning. Gargoyles. Lovely cemetery just outside. Somber. Massive. A bit cold. Back to George Street Square to explore. Great area. Though it was a bit creepy last night. Grey skied today. Buchanan Street Subway is right next to our hotel. Purchase discovery ticket. One day pass. 3 pounds per. We’re off to Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum for a Dr Who exhibit. Yes! 4 minutes til the subway arrives. Creepy sounds coming from the underground tunnel. People waiting are strangely quiet. Similar to a scene from an old horror film. On board. Fast. Yellow and red. Five stops later. We’re off. Awesome. Up some stairs. Kelvin hall subway stop. Back on street level. Alley. Turn right. In the street. Towards museum. 5-10 minute walk. Beautiful. At museum. Incredible building. Gorgeous. Dr Who exhibit signs. Inside. Pick up tickets. Ahh. In the exhibit. Face of Boe. Cybermen. Dalek. Sonic Screwdriver. Timelord watch. Ood. This is great. Absolutely great. I love Dr Who. Exhibit is over. Time to explore the rest of the museum. Rembrandt. Monet. Van Gough. Loads more. Lunch at museum. K.G. Cafe. Coffee for us both. Tiffany had a ham sandwich. I had a mushroom pasta. Out of the museum. Walking back to subway. Back to Buchanan Street Station. Arrive. Now to explore Glasgow Exchange Square. Super old building with a Borders in it. Awesome. Shops everywhere. Apple Store. North Face. A million others. Exploring. Feeling weird after mushroom pasta. Back to hotel for afternoon break. 3:30p. Update blog. Rest. I am tired. A bit of TV. Time to find something to eat for dinner. Back on the streets of Glasgow. Tiff is in the mood for pizza. Me too. Pizza Express. A Eruo chain. Kinda similar to California Pizza Kitchen. Very nice. Peperoni for me. Cheese and tomato for Tiffany. They don’t cut the pizza for you over here. And everyone uses forks to eat it. Strange. Tastes good. Paid. More shops and what not. Explore. Else. Back to hotel for the evening. 8:30p. IT Crowd. Skype with Rachel. I love my family. And it’s over.

(Glasgow, Scotland) 0107 – Locker. Code: 17483. Woke up at 8a. This hotel/hostel has been great. Very interesting. Check-Out. Back to town. Train station. Left Luggage for 5 pounds. Today we are riding a steam train through the Highlands to the Coast. This is the train they used to film Harry Potter. Nice. Supposed to be the best steam train ride in Europe. Two English people are setting across from us today. They seem very nice. A few kids have boarded the train. “I don’t want to ride backwards daddy.” Beautiful views. Absolutely lovely. Onward to Maliag. A small sea port. 11a. This is great. the Black Loch is to the right. Ocean is to the left. People with us are great. A quick stop at a station. And we’re off for the final leg. Famous white sands of Morar. At the port. Off the train. Perfect town. Fish. Boats. Sea. Gray. Now for lunch. The Tea Room. A small cafe. A girl is playing the fiddle in the distance. Coffees and soup for us both. Fish market across the street. A true sea town. Ocean view. I can see three Scottish Islands. I’ll come back and travel them someday. Numerous viaducts on the train track. Note: This was a round trip from Fort William to Maliag. Mike and Judy. Sitting across from us on the train. Giving us tips for visiting London. They love to travel also. Pulling back into the station. Say farewell to our new friends. 4p. Our train to Glasgow leaves at 17:37. On time. And we’re off to explore Fort William again. Tiffany wants ice cream. Done. Small shop single scoop vanilla for Tiff and a toffee for me. I made a sticky mess. Grocery store. Picked up sandwiches for the train. Tons of sport equipment stores in Fort William. Ahh. Because it is at the base of Ben Nevis. Lots of backpackers waiting for this train. All aboard. straight shot to Glasgow with numerous stops along the way. Stuff packs overhead. Fit great. Sweet. Beautiful scenery. Highlands are much grader that I had originally thought. Massive. Love it. Dude next to me is listening to RadioHead. 8:34p. Estimated arrival at 10p. 10:05p. Getting close. A bit late. And we’re there. Through the station. On George Street Square. Can’t find hotel. Maps. Found it. Kinda scary city at night. Check-In. Call Mom. It’s her birthday. I love my mom. And good night planet earth.

(Fort William, Scotland) 7:30a. Time to wake up. Loch Ness today. Yes! Deep. Dark. Daunting. Time to pack. Dude, I love this backpack. Check Out. Hotel has a left luggage. Leave our packs here. Breakfast. Coffees and rolls. Very good. Bus station. We are looking for the Jacobite Loch Ness Coach. Bus stop 1. Now we wait. 9:15a. Tour guide is great. Funny. 30 Minute ride to boat dock. Beautiful day. Sun is bright. An Englishman just told me that he hasn’t forgotten the Boston Tea Party. At the docks. Show our boat passes. On the boat. Water is dark. Ideal living conditions for a monster. 30min cruise on the Loch. Photos. Video. Magic. Beautiful Mountains all around. Haunting beauty of the deep loch. About to dock at Urquhart Castle Ruins. Boat has docked. Beauty. Castle is awesome. Incredible. I find old ruins to be gorgeous. A bit odd perhaps. I think that I just spotter the monster! Some french dude saw it too. A disturbance in the water. About 100 meters away. I caught the after math on video. OMG. I love Scotland. Finished exploring the castle ruins. Up to the visitors center. A little shop. French dude just asked me to send him the video on facebook. Exchange info. Exciting. Nessie how I love thee. Another coach back to Inverness. Pick up backpacks from left luggage. Buy bus tickets to Fort Williams. Tiffany found a small shop to buy some snacks for the journey. A local just told me that these have been the best weather days yet this summer. It has rained alot this year. Great weather indeed. A bit hot now. On the bus to Fort William. Beautiful route along various lochs. Mountains everywhere. It is no wonder there was no train going from Invernes to Fort William. Sheep. Highlands. Almost there. I see Ben Nevis. The largest mountain in the UK. We’ve stopped. Off the bus. This seems a small town. Bus station and train station are very close. Walking around the town with our packs. Found an Info Center. Maps. Perfect. Done. Found Our Hotel/Hostel. Check-in. Very Quaint. I love it. Home. Explore the tow. A main street. Small shops. Lots of Pubs. Toy shop. Dr Who! Bought a sonic screwdriver. Awesome. Walking along a Loch that parallels main street. Time for food. Fish and Chips. Found a bench down by the Loch. Delicious. Tiffany saved a duck from eating a plastic bag. Small grocery store for a treat. Back to hotel. BBC news. Time for bed. Super busy day. Cheers.

(Inverness , Scotland) Alarm. Awake. 7a. Tired. Packing up my gear. Backpacking to the North today. Off to the train station. It’s a bit cold again. Time to find breakfast. Coffee and a muffin. Now to find the correct platform for our train. hmm. The 8:33a to Inverness is on time. No platform has been allocated yet. 8:10a. I’m sure that I look quite American at the moment. I’m wearing my massive pack. And shuffling through various tickets and maps. I’ve seen at least five other backpackers this morning.

Time for a bit of geography review. Edinburgh (Capital) is on the east coast of Scoland. Twenty miles from the sea. Inveness is the northern most city in Scotland. A city in the heart of the highlands. Further north yet, are a few small towns and Isles. Fort William is near the west coast. It lies at the base of Ben Nevis. The highest point in Britain. Malliag is a sea port on the far west coast. Glasgow is in the south of Scotland. It is the largest city. Know for it’s art and culture.

8:23a. They still haven’t announced a platform. ScotRail. There are 19 different platforms in the station. Overhead displays for each with trains going all over Britain. Getting a bit concerned. Tickets in hand. Platform 16! Through the turnstile. Onto the platform. In the train. Kinda jogged. Stuff our packs in the luggage racks. Find a Seat. Rest. OMG! They just announced that this train is leaving for Aberdeen at 8:29a! It’s 8:27a. Wrong train. Asked the English woman next to me for verification. Ahh! Grab our gear. Off the train. Tiffany’s pack got snagged for a bit. Press the button. Doors open. Off! Train pulled away 60 seconds later. Now to find the correct train. 5 minutes. Done. It was further up on platform 16. They split a train. Resulting in two trains on the same platform. Tricky. Stowed the luggage. Found two seats. Tiffany can’t stop laughing. I imagine the Scots on the other train also had quite a chuckle over our situation. As we literally stumbled off the train. Everything is right. Train is great. BritRail pass was well worth the buy. A train across Scotland into the highlands. Mountains/Hills are everywhere. We are sitting backwards. The lady in front of us is a writer for the daily record. Very interesting. I purchased a soda off the food trolley. One and fifty pounds. Absolutely gorgeous. Alot of Farmers and sheep on the hills. Next stop Inverness. We arrive. Train station is bigger than I expected. On the road. Hotel is a few blocks down. Early check-in. Awesome. Food? Leakey’s BookShop and Cafe. Perfect! I just ordered a coffee and a tuna/spice on bread. Tiffany ordered a cheese and tomato toastie. 1:11p. This is the largest secondhand bookshop in Scotland. Really not that big. Multiple stories of course. Super old maps. Books. Paintings. Off to explore the city. Up streets. Down alleys. Lovely little place. All sorts of shops. At the bus station inquiring about tickets to Fort William tomorrow afternoon. A quick walk by the River Ness. And back to the hotel for an afternoon walking break. Time for more exploring. It’s getting cold. Time for our third meal. A European American restaurant. hehe. Cheese Burgers for both of us. Done with food. Stop by a small shop for water and a candy bar. Aero Bar. Popular over here. Back to hotel. Organize my gear for tomorrow. Bed.

(Edinburgh, Scotland) Awake. 7:45a. A bit of BBC news. Time to find breakfast. A rainy day in Britain. And cold this morning. The Elephant House Cafe for breakfast. This is where J.K. Rowling wrote Harry Potter book 1. There is a grave out the window for a Tom Riddle. Inspiration perhaps. I ordered a ham/cheese croissant and a coffee. Tiffany bought a bacon/sausage roll and a coffee. Done with breakfast. Absorbing the genius. Time to visit Edinburgh Castle. I feel alot better after getting some food.

Just arrived at Edinburgh Castle. Old. Very beautiful. Purchased our tickets to enter. History. The Scottish people are filled with Passion. Free Tour! Great! Walking. Starts at 10a. Great view of the city. New Town to the left. Old Edinburgh to the right. Cold. 30min walking tour was fantastic. Our guide was very knowledgeable. Now to roam. “To the Glory of God and in Memory of the Scots who Fell.” A large military memorial. Every known name for the past few hundred years. Time to find the crown jewels. I’m in a Chapel from the 12th century. 300 years before Columbus. Amazing. I’m looking down the barrel of a cannon from 1447. Know as “Mon’s Meg”. Two mile range. Glad we arrived early. Getting crowded. Crown Jewels were gorgeous. Exploring the catacombs beneath the castle.

Time to visit the shops. Kilts, hats, buttons, whiskey, and beer. They drink quite a bit in Scotland. Pubs are chalk full by 11a. Drop in at the Tran station to activate our BritRail Passes for tomorrow. Train leaves at 8:33a tomorrow morning for the north of Scotland. Train station is big. Exactly what I imagined. The correct escalator is on the left side. Same way on the paths people walk on the left. Everyone is super nice over here. It is also much quieter. Even in a large crowd. Off to climb the Walter Scott management. He is credited with reviving Scottish heritage. Record store. New Muse Album. Great! A bit more walking in new town. Time for a snack. Two coffees and a jacket potato to split from the coffee republic. More shops. Back to the Hotel. Rest. Prepping for a hike up “Calton Hill”. The hill is awesome. All sorts of ruins. Another great view. Super. This area was known as the Athens of the north. Unique. Back to the Royal Mile. Shops. I bought a flag. hmm. What next. Food. Third meal. Another local Italian cafe. Popular over here. Bella Italia. Done. Sore an tired. We return to the hotel. 7:45p. Now to pack and sleep. We wake early tomorrow for a train ride to Northern Scotland. Peace.
